The St. Louis Sharks’ varsity wrestling program earned its fourth consecutive district championship on Monday, Feb. 11, at home by first defeating Beaverton 49-30 in the semi final, and Montabella 33-27 in the final.
It was a terrific night for Shark wrestling and the community overall. We had a great crowd cheering our wrestlers through all 14 matches, and in the end we came out on top. I’m extremely proud of this young team and can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
The finals match required a total team effort and was iced when heavyweight Luke Maxwell pinned his opponent with 2.1 seconds left in the first period.
For seniors Ryan Downs, Isaac Howd, Modestie Hitchcock, and Eleazar Abbott, it was four in a row.
An elated Downs, who helped his team with two pins on the night, said, “I wouldn’t have wanted to do this with any other team. It’s a great feeling knowing us seniors were able to accomplish this all four years.”
Two-match winners on the night were: Alex Newton, Gavin Giles, Robert Russell, Abbott, Downs, and Howd.
With over 10 freshmen in our lineup, we will look to add a fifth district title in a row next year as that is something yet to be accomplished in Shark wrestling history.
