The Rest of the Story

This is where the St. Louis Sentinel reports the final dispositions of notable local crimes. The information is provided by Police Chief Richard J. Ramereiz Jr. and Gratiot County Prosecutor Keith Kushion.

Domestic assault

Officers were dispatched to a domestic assault in progress at 1:23 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4. Justin Alan Cowling of Alma fled the scene when officer(s) arrived. A state police tracking dog led officers to the suspect who was then lodged in the Gratiot County Jail.  Ultimately, Cowling pled guilty to attempted resisting and obstructing and was sentenced to 34 days in jail, 12 months probation and $880 in fines and costs.

Sex crime complaints

Police received two criminal sexual conduct complaints on Thursday, Aug. 12. One was closed due to lack of evidence to support the allegation. The other was closed because the suspect died before the investigation could be completed.

Domestic assaults

Two domestic assaults were reported (on Tuesday, Aug. 17, and Wednesday, Aug. 22). Both were investigated and turned over to Gratiot County Prosecutor Keith Kushion for possible charges. One case was still under review as of Dec. 16, 2022. The other was dismissed.

Sex crime

A criminal sexual conduct complaint was reported on Friday, Aug. 24. The case was closed on account of a lack of evidence to support the allegation.

Sex crime

A criminal sexual conduct complaint was turned over to St. Louis police on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The complaint was initially reported to Alma police, but the crime took place in St. Louis. The suspect was found guilty of third degree criminal sexual conduct and aggravated indecent exposure. His sentence was 78 months to 15 years in prison for the CSC charge and 16-24 months in prison on the indecent exposure charge.

Domestic assault

A domestic assault between a parent and a child was investigated on Wednesday, Sept. 15. The juvenile was charged with a crime and sentenced on Dec. 20, 2021.

Sex offense

A criminal sexual conduct complaint was reported on Friday, Sept. 17. The case was ultimately closed due to lack of evidence supporting the allegation.

A criminal sexual conduct complaint was reported on Monday, Sept. 20. The case was closed due to lack of evidence supporting the allegation.

Speeding, drunk, suspended license

Officers attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on Michigan Avenue near Pine at 12:19 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30. A three-block pursuit ensued before the suspect pulled over. A 34-year-old Alma resident was arrested for fleeing and eluding, drunk driving and cited for having open intoxicants in the car. The driver was later found to have a suspended license. The suspect failed to appear for a court appearance. An arrest warrant was issued, but the suspect has yet to be picked up (as of Dec. 15, 2022).

Domestic assault

A domestic assault was reported at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8. An investigation ensued. A juvenile was petitioned into juvenile court on charges that were authorized Nov. 9, 2021.

Child abuse

Police received a report of child abuse on Tuesday, Nov. 9. An investigation is underway. The case was closed due to lack of evidence supporting the allegation.

Domestic assault

A domestic assault was reported and investigated at 2:23 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12. The complaint was turned over to the Gratiot County Prosecutor’s Office. But the case was closed after the victim refused to cooperate.

Counterfeit money

An employee of the Sunoco 7-Eleven turned over to police what is believed to be counterfeit money on Saturday, Nov. 20. The investigation was turned over to the United States Secret Service. No additional information is available.

Domestic assault

A domestic assault was reported at 8:37 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, and investigated by the SLPD. The defendant pled to possession of methamphetamine and was sentenced on June 8, 2021.

A domestic assault was reported at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7. The suspect was arrested and lodged in the Gratiot County Jail. A report was submitted for review but no charges were authorized.

A domestic assault was reported at 10:55 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10. The complaint was turned over to Gratiot County Prosecutor Keith Kushion for review. The case was closed on account of the suspect being found incompetent to stand trial. 

Criminal sexual conduct

Two CSC complaints were reported to police at 9:07 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, and 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20. Both are under investigation. One complaint has yet to be resolved. Charges were denied on the other.
